House Panel Passes Resolution That Would Bring Casinos To Georgia

A House panel passed legislation Monday that could place casino gambling on the ballot in Georgia this forthcoming election year.

The House Regulated Industries Committee voted 13-3 in favor of Senate Resolution 841, according to a report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

SR841, sponsored by seven Republican senators, would amend the state constitution and permit casino gambling, horse racing and sports betting from The Peach State.

The campaign was directed by House Economic Development and Tourism Chairman Ron Stephens, who’s asserting that the settlement would stimulate a market in need of sparking subsequent to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With almost any modification to the constitution, it has to pass a statewide referendum. In the event the legislation reaches the ballot this November, and it’s passed by Georgia taxpayers, then there could be many county-by-county elections to choose if these communities needed to let gambling.

In order to obtain on the ballot, the settlement has to pass using a two-thirds majority in both houses of their legislature.

The resolution will permit both future casinos along with the Georgia Lottery to provide sports gambling. Last week, a sports gambling bill passed a Senate committee, but attorneys advising the nation say a constitutional amendment is the best way to put this up.

Under the strategy, tax earnings from gambling institution could be breach up into three different state capital. The nation would use the earnings to finance crisis funds, general funds and an “opportunity fund” which helps poor families pay for pre-K and faculty.

A gambling expansion that could contain casinos has been around the brain of lawmakers for quite a while. Last January, Georgia lawmakers held a public hearing online casino gambling in the Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The Speedway’s president, Ed Clark, published renderings past October of a casino hotel complex built on site.
